Tanzanians are furious after learning that a middle-aged woman sexually assaulted an eight-year-old boy and exposed him to STDs. Desderia Mbwelwa, 57, was sentenced to 29 years in prison on Friday by a court, although the specifics of the decision have not yet received extensive press coverage.
The woman questioned the victim where his buddies were when she discovered him herding cattle in a community in the southern district of Iringa on the day of the attack. After he claimed that his buddies were not present, she is then alleged to have sexually attacked him beneath a tree.
A doctor who examined the youngster and determined he had wounds and had contracted sexual illnesses as a result of contamination in the genital region was one of the case's five witnesses.
Mbwelwa is alleged to have defended herself by asserting that she is an adult with dependent children and grandkids. Because his client was not tested to determine whether she actually had STDs, her attorney, Frank Mwela, said he intended to appeal the decision. "My client was not tested positive for those diseases, which my client and her witness have both confirmed they do not have because one of the witnesses is her husband," he said.
